The ACFTL only considers the most experienced and professional attorneys to become part of the organization.

Members, also referred to as diplomates, work in the organization to advance the values and standards that are important to family law practices.

Information about the organization

The American College of Family Trial Lawyers was formed in 1993. It consists of 100 trial lawyers who have demonstrated the ability to handle complex and sophisticated matters involved with various aspects of family law. Areas of family law that diplomates deal with include:

  • All matters of divorce, including High-Net worth cases
  • Palimony
  • Paternity
  • Domestic torts
  • Child abduction

The diplomates of ACFTL have brought national recognition to the organization due to their involvement with high-profile cases and important national and local issues. Diplomates also influence current and future family law issues via innovative concept exchanges, guest speaking engagements and contributions to continuing education.

The selection of members

Securing an invitation into the ACFTL is no easy feat. All candidates must have a minimum of 10 years of experience in family law trial practice and be members of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

Not only must candidates demonstrate excellent courtroom abilities and litigation skills, but they also must embody the highest standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, collegiality and civility. Only family law lawyers who are the best in their state receive consideration for membership.
